2009 (First Run) Fender Road Worn ’60s Jazz Bass 3-Tone Sunburst – 8.4 Lbs!
Up for sale, here’s a 2009 Fender Road Worn ’60s Jazz Bass in 3-Tone Sunburst from the very first production run, when Fender introduced the Road Worn series to the world. Those first-year instruments have earned a reputation among players and collectors, and this one shows why. Fender clearly set out to prove what the Ensenada factory could do, and the early run was built with a level of care and quality that sits closer to the American Vintage line than to anything else made in Mexico at the time, even sharing some of its hardware. As we all know in the Fender world, things like that don’t always carry over the years, and the later production never quite matched these early examples.
The result is an outstanding instrument with vintage specs, weighing in at a light 8.4 lbs and wonderfully resonant unplugged and amplified. The rosewood fretboard is a beautiful dark piece, as you can see in the photos. The relic job is impeccable, with a thin nitrocellulose finish on the body that wears and breathes the way a vintage instrument should, paired with aged hardware. It has the look, feel and voice of an old Jazz Bass that has lived a good life on the road, without the vintage price tag.
These were offered at a surprisingly affordable price when they came out, and that’s worth noting today, when a current Road Worn instrument often costs more than an entry-level US-made Fender. In our opinion these early examples are the better instruments. If you know, you know.
The bass is in excellent condition and plays amazingly well. Everything is original except the gig bag, which is a newer aftermarket replacement. These originally came with a fairly basic Fender gig bag that usually ended up with broken zippers, so the upgrade is a plus.
Ships to Continental US and select international destinations. Priced accordingly low for a first-run example of this quality, so don’t miss it.
